Preamble:

India is hosting the first Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (AMCDRR) after the adoption of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (SFDRR). The event will be held in Delhi during November 3-5, 2016 and will invite the participation of more than 60 countries from Asia and the Pacific. In the run up to the AMCDRR, National Curtain Raiser event is being organized on October 26, 2016 at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, New Delhi. The thematic area of this event is “Natural Hazards and Risk”.

 

Objectives:

The main objectives of this National Curtain Raiser event are as follows:

·         Status of multi-hazard disaster risk assessments in India: challenges and opportunities for innovation

·         Managing disaster damage and loss data in India

·         Application of disaster risk information for development decision making

·         Involvement of community–organizations in local level risk assessments: where do the scientific and indigenous knowledge meet?

 

Content:

This event shall focus on the risk assessments of natural hazards, such as, Earthquakes, Wind, Flood, Landslide, Air Pollution, and other multi-hazards in India. The management of disaster damage and related loss to life and property shall be discussed. The scientific ways to mitigate the disaster risk using innovating and cost-effective techniques shall be presented. This event shall include the technical presentations by eminent speakers in India followed by a panel discussion. Nearly 300 participants from academia, industries, ministries, NGOs, and students are expected to attend this event. Short films related to disaster risk reduction will be shown during the event in line with the thematic areas of the event.

 

Outcome:

A summary of key issues deliberated upon and recommendations shall be submitted to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) for the follow-up actions.
